The Effective Audit Committee

This event is aimed primarily at Audit Committee and Workforce Committee members, although open to all officers who attend these committees.

This event will focus on the relationship between the Workforce Committee and the Audit Committee, examining their different functions in relation to receiving and providing assurance around staffing capacity and capability.

This event is aimed primarily at Audit Committee and Finance Committee members, although open to all officers who attend these meetings.

This event will focus on the relationship between the finance committee and the audit committee, examining their different functions in relation to receiving and providing assurance around finances and IT/cyber.

Bryan Millar (Audit Committee Chair at Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven CCG, Bradford Districts CCG and Bradford City CCG) will open the day with a discussion on the differing functions of the Audit Committee and the Finance Committee in relation to Finance and Performance.

10.00 – 10.40

Cathy Kennedy (Director of Operational Finance (Yorkshire & Humber) at NHS Improvement and NHS England) will identify NHSE/I expectations of Providers and Commissioners in relation to finance and performance.

10.40 – 11.00

Audit Yorkshire and 360 Assurance will provide some feedback on the Finance risks analysed as part of the BAF/GBAF benchmarking undertaken for 2019/20.

Investigations – Approach and lessons

John Lester (Head of Investigations at NHS Improvement and NHS England) will provide an understanding of what happens during an investigation when a Trust experiences financial, operational or quality challenges, and what Boards and committees can learn from the themes arising from investigations.

360 Assurance and Audit Yorkshire will present a session on “Avoiding the bait – as cyber-criminals get smarter, we examine how you can protect yourself, your organisation and your family from cyber-crime”.

Paul Barnes (Head of Operations and Engagement - Cyber Security at NHSX) will highlight the role of the Audit Committee and Finance Committee in Managing Cyber Security at a strategic level.

Paul Tiffen (Quality And Compliance Manager at NHS Counter Fraud Authority) will discuss how Audit Committees and Finance Committees should gain assurance that they have an efficient and effective counter fraud services.

George Squire (Digital Developer NHS Counter Fraud Authority) will present the NHS Fraud Champions project and showcase the e-learning package NHSCFA are developing for Fraud Champions.
